Investigation of AI Company's Work with Eric Adams Administration by Law Enforcement Agency

Investigation of AI Company's Work with Eric Adams Administration by Law Enforcement Agency

The New York City Department of Investigation is currently probing an artificial intelligence company that piloted its technology in a migrant shelter under the Eric Adams administration. The company in question is Remark Holdings, based in Las Vegas, with financial instability and links to China.

Background of the Investigation

The investigation was prompted by a previous report by POLITICO outlining how Timothy Pearson, a senior aide to Mayor Adams, facilitated Remark Holdings' entry into the administration. Pearson, responsible for migrant shelter contracts, left his position amidst corruption investigations. Notably, he had a personal relationship with a consultant for Remark at the time.

Response from Authorities

The Department of Investigation hinted at the ongoing probe in response to a Freedom of Information Law request by POLITICO. They cited potential interference with law enforcement proceedings as grounds for non-disclosure. Both DOI and City Hall representatives refrained from further comments.

Company's Perspective

Remark's CEO, Kai-Shing Tao, refrained from commenting on the investigation but emphasized that their technology had undergone evaluations by key city departments before implementation. The company's AI technology, utilized in a Brooklyn shelter to detect fires via security cameras, was part of a single pilot program at no cost to the city.

Legal Ramifications

Richard Levitt, representing former Remark consultant LaTrisha Winston, chose not to provide a statement. The company had engaged Winston's consulting firm in a contract prior to wider promotion within city circles.

Concerns and Past Engagements

Remark has faced scrutiny for its surveillance projects in China and financial losses reported to the SEC. Despite working with notable NYC clients, questions persist about its operations and ties to influential figures like Mayor Adams.

Future Prospects

While the technology did not progress to procurement stages, Tao expressed optimism about future collaborations with the city. The company's aspirations for safety technology implementation in NYC remain undeterred.
