NEW YORK — City Council Speaker Adrienne Adams is urging Mayor Eric Adams to step down following the exit of four key aides dissatisfied with his immigration policies.
Speaker Adams declared on Monday, "It is evident that Mayor Adams has forfeited the trust and support of his team, fellow officials, and the people of New York." She added, "For the sake of New York City and its residents, he must resign. This administration is no longer capable of effective governance under Eric Adams' leadership."
Strained Relations
These remarks signal the culmination of a strained relationship that has deteriorated over time. Speaker Adams, who endorsed Mayor Adams during the competitive 2021 primary, has been at odds with him for years. The discord dates back to the mayor's unsuccessful backing of her rival in the internal speaker election and subsequent legislative disputes.
Deputy Mayors Maria Torres-Springer, Anne Williams-Isom, Meera Joshi, and Chauncey Parker are all set to resign, confirmed by Adams' office on Monday.
Speaker Adams continued, "The resignations reflect the consequences of the mayor's decisions, causing prolonged instability that now jeopardizes the city's autonomy, invites disorder, and poses risks to our communities." She emphasized the need for ethical leadership that prioritizes public service over personal agendas.
Defiant Stance
Despite mounting pressure, Mayor Adams remained defiant during an event in Brooklyn, asserting his ability to lead through adversity. He highlighted his accomplishments since facing indictment and vowed to persevere amidst the turmoil.
City Comptroller Brad Lander has urged the mayor to devise a comprehensive contingency plan to manage the city amidst the departures. Lander hinted at convening a committee to potentially remove Adams if such a plan is not promptly presented.
Council finance committee chair Justin Brannan, a comptroller candidate, also joined the calls for Mayor Adams' resignation, citing concerns over integrity and accountability in city governance.
